Youdao Dictionary Pen 3 - A Language Learning Tool That Meets Multifaceted Needs of a Family of 3!
【Duoshou with You-Public Review】 A language learning tool that meets multifaceted needs of a family of 3!
Reviewer Self-Introduction
I'm Brigitte, a reviewer for American Chopper Group 39. When my family and I immigrated to the United States a few years ago, learning English became a hot topic for our family. We felt that we didn't have enough English vocabulary every day just like a girl always talking about losing weight. So what's the best way to learn English? Reading English books and watching American TV shows! But the problem is that we don't like books that are too childish, the ones we are too hard to read, and we often get stuck with words we don't know, which is really frustrating.
My son Allen is in Grade 9 and attends a private high school. He is a sunny boy who loves reading, sports and music. We brought him to the US when he was a primary school student, and he keeps speaking Chinese because he loves studying and also took Spanish classes. Therefore, this pen is so good for him.
When I saw this baby from the chopped review group, my heart was filled with anticipation. Yes! I successfully applied to review the international version of Youdao dictionary pen! Chinese, English, Spanish, really is to meet the needs of all three families, let me savor the next.
Unpacking Experience
Product for review: Youdao Dictionary Pen 3 Global Version: Click Here to Buy
After I received the international version of Youdao dictionary, I couldn't wait to open the package and took the first picture immediately. After taking a phone call, the dictionary pen disappeared, and my son had already taken it to his study to charge it instantly, set it up, and started scanning his English novel, and he was very interested in the Spanish pronunciation coming from the pen, grinning while listening to it and saying, "That's really good. Then he looked up and asked me, "Mom, this feels great, can I bring it to school? I don't think many people in the school have one of these pens, do they? They must be very curious, and they must think it's a great tool for learning Spanish. "That's it, our first impressions when we opened the package: it's beautiful, it's easy to use, it feels great in my hand, and the size of the screen is higher than I expected.

This is the unboxing feedback from this teenager: "This product is a "dictionary pen", which translates through contact scanning. The product packaging is simple, red and white with. The product is black and sleek, with a modern feel. The product is light in weight and I think it is most comfortable when held with a brush. The instructions are simple and easy to understand with precise pictures, so it is easy to get started. The product is roughly the size of two four-color ballpoint pens or four pencils making it easy to carry around in a school bag or pocket with less risk of dropping it from a pocket. The steps to use are very simple, just press the pen tip please on the paper and slide it to the right, without any pause, and the translation rate is high."
Using Experience
My fav point 1: The menu design is simple and clear, my kind of thing! The main menu has four options, all of which are very classic, and I like the wordbook and Histroy! There is a small asterisk next to each word or sentence that is scanned, so don't underestimate it, it will help you count it in your wordbook with one easy poke! It is super convenient to review words and sentences afterwards; this function of history can also record all the words you have looked up, which is very thoughtful. I'm not going to go into detail in the settings menu, but the overall feeling is very professional and attentive, a device so small, this design is considered affordable, so I do not feel which setting function is full, nor do I feel which function is missing, so "no feeling, is the best feeling", isn't it?
My fav point 2:Two-way automatic language recognition. Trying to play with various ways to find, when you select the English and Chinese dictionaries, whether the scan of Chinese or English, the dictionary pen can automatically identify your scan language and the corresponding translation language, which is undoubtedly very smart for language learners is very helpful feature, no need to switch each time the specified scan language, unlock difficult words in minutes!
My fav point 3:I believe most of the 70's and 80's in elementary school when learning English are British pronunciation and international phonetic symbols, so to the United States son always said I have an accent, because they learn the American pronunciation. Youdao dictionary pen actually so thoughtful to provide the British and American pronunciation of the word spelling phonetic. This is what I have been asking for a long time, even though I often use Google Translate, to be honest, many words are not given phonetic symbols. Youdao dictionary, really good!
Of course, there is a little trick to scanning a word, don't scan in the word before or after or punctuation, then the dictionary may think you are scanning a sentence instead of a word, you will not see more about the word, phonetic and example sentences, etc.
My fav point 4:With regard to dictionaries, our main concern is undoubtedly whether the translation is accurate and authentic. I took a book on my bed, "Steve Jobs", found some sentences from it, and did a few sets of tests.
Test 1:
He was a taut, tatooed Engineer
I scanned a part of a sentence and did a set of comparison between Youdao dictionary pen and Google Translate, and I believe Youdao's translation sounds more in line with our Chinese habits, that is, complete expression!
Test 2:
Jobs thus became one of the first fifty employees at Atari
This sentence involves a company name Atari, which is accurately translated into Chinese as "雅达利" by Youdao dictionary; while Google Translate keeps the original English word without translation. From this point on Youdao's performance is also good.
Test 3:Multi-line Scanning
This feature has greatly improved efficiency, hasn't it? With the dictionary pen in the book can scan a line to continue to scan the next line, two lines of scanning interval within 2 seconds can be, and is basically synchronized translation, the second line of scanning is almost over, the translation voice has begun to broadcast, the response speed is fast, personally tested good. If you want to use the translation software of your cell phone or computer, you have to tap it into your cell phone or computer and repeat this operation, so that a delicious biography of Steve Jobs will become less coherent and vivid, right?
In addition, in terms of translation quality, this sentence is more like speaking Chinese in the dictionary, and Google Translate is a bit too mechanical.
While I was doing the product review, Allen completed his review report and we coincided in many ways. Here's some more of his feedback.
"As a translation pen, the dictionary pen is impeccable and accurate, combining translation, search, and reading assistance. When scanning a single word, the dictionary pen provides bilingual definitions, bilingual example sentences, as well as British and American pronunciation and speaking training. When translating sentences, only oral training is provided. The product's battery is sufficient for one day of use and does not interfere with normal use when charging. Compared to other translators, the Youdao dictionary pen has more features than ever."
"For students who don't have a cell phone, Youdao Dictionary Pen is a powerful tool. Compared with Google Translate, the translation speed and various functions of Dictionary Pen give it a big advantage. Compared to my school's recommended online dictionary, WordReference, and physical dictionaries, Dictionary Pen's performance in translating sentences makes it stand out. That's why Youdao Dictionary Pen is most useful for middle school and elementary school students. I don't use my phone often enough to have access to translation software, so the dictionary pen is also very helpful to me. However, if a person has a cell phone and is not studying or working in a language, I personally think Google Translate is more beneficial."
"Dictionary Pen translates more accurately, but sometimes misinterprets some sentences, such as the following set of examples. Literally, the translation is not inaccurate. However, when combined with the context, the word "grow to" should be translated as "get" because "400 inches" is the total annual precipitation in the rainforest as stated in the text. This example makes me personally believe that dictionary pens are more suitable for translating words and ordinary sentences, and that translating long sentences or natural paragraph-sized text requires the reader to share with the context in order to understand the real meaning of the text. Of course, the same problem also exists in GOOLE TRANSLATE
Original text: "They get up to four hundred inches a year"
Translation: "They get up to 400 inches a year"
"When I evaluated the Spanish translation, I felt that the accuracy rate was generally good. Occasionally, some of the technical names are inaccurate. For example, in the sentence "The linear momentum of the bullet must have the same magnitude as the linear momentum of the block", there is a word " momentum", which means "inertia" in Chinese, but the English to Western dictionary translates it as "impulso" and the Chinese meaning of this word is "impulso", which has a deviation. And GOOGLE TRANSLATE translates into momentum more accurately.
Summary
Overall, Youdao Dictionary Pen not only meets my need for an electronic dictionary, but also gives us some surprises. We often use Google Translate, which is not known to have good Chinese translations. The quality of "English to Chinese" translation is much better. The highlights of this dictionary pen are: easy to carry, easy to operate, and fast response time. The scanning function can also be used for e-books, which is very suitable for the speed and efficiency that people need in this digital age. I am very grateful for the progress of technology, so that the digital and intelligent into everyone's life, bringing a lot of convenience, but also make a lot of impossible into possible. I believe this product will be a must-have learning product for many people.
